The Masters’s second round is well under way and it’s time to wonder about who’ll make the cut for the third round

The Masters’ second day has begun and there are a lot of intriguing talking points from yesterday’s play. The young American Jordan Spieth is the major story from the opening day after the 21 year old had an incredible round of golf, finishing on 8 under par.

That’s the beauty of the Masters, there are so many talented players in the field that anyone of them could have a great day and surprise us all. There weren’t too many people expecting Spieth to have that much of an impact on the tournament. It’s still early in the tournament but if the young man can continue his early form then we are in for a treat.

Enough about the youth of golf, let’s talk about the old dog that came out of hiatus to play in this tournament. Tiger Woods’ decided to take an indefinite break from tournaments back in early February, claiming he would only come back when he’s tournament ready.

It was only last week when the former world number one came out and announced that he would play in The Masters this year, a tournament Woods has won on four occasions. The announcement was met by delight from most of the golfing community, which just goes to show the impact Woods still has on the sport of golf.

His performance on the opening day left a lot to be desired but he by no means put himself out of contention for the tournament. Granted some major changes would have to be made for him to actually win the tournament, but it’s not out of the realm of possibility to think he could make a push on the last two days.

Woods finished 1 over par yesterday after making four bogeys throughout the day, not ideal by any stretch of the imagination. He seems to have shaken off some of the cobwebs however as Woods has already made three birdies and only scored one bogey, making him 1 under par for the entire tournament.

To make the cut in the Masters you have to be in the top 50 players, or within 10 shots of the leader. It would appear that Jordan Spieth is making the 10 shot rule very difficult for players, but Woods is all but certain to finish in the top 50 players. It would take an unprecedented fall from grace for Tiger not to make it to round three, and the way he has been playing today it seems that’s not going to happen.

It’s probably a good thing if I’m being honest. I’m not Woods’ biggest fan for various reasons, but I’m aware that he is good for golf. There is more excitement around tournaments that he features in, even though he doesn’t have much hope of winning them anymore. He has achieved so much in the game that people are still monitoring his every swing, despite the fact he isn’t ranked in the top 100 golfers in the world anymore.
