Yankees third baseman Chase Headley stole the show in the first contest of the season against the Red Sox, tying the game in the ninth with a home run.

Whether a baseball fan or not, few sports fans can recall many more memorable sports moments in the past decade-plus than the dramatic game-tying or winning home runs between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox.

Those moments are part of the lore of what is now lauded as the best rivalry in baseball. Friday night that lore added another chapter as Yankees third baseman Chase Headley hit a game-tying home run in the ninth inning off Edward Mujica.

The Red Sox built a 3-0 lead in the sixth inning after Daniel Nava notched a two-run single. The Yankees crept back into the game in the bottom half of that inning, scoring single runs on an Alex Rodriguez single and Brian McCann sacrifice fly to make it 3-2.

The score stayed the same until two outs and a 2-1 count on the Yankees’ final hope of the night.

Headley acquired from the Padres last season in a trade, launched the 2-1 pitch deep to right field into the second deck of new Yankees Stadium off Mujica–the interim closer for the Red Sox until Koji Uehara returns to the Red Sox lineup, which could be Monday at Fenway Park for the team’s home opener, assuming all goes well Saturday in his rehab appearance.

The teams remained tied 3-3 into the 11th inning.
