Cardinals’ Bruce Arians sees female coaches as a possibility
Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians believes that female coaches could be a thing eventually.
The NFL made lots of headlines when they hired female referee Sarah Thomas this past week. The move was met with mostly praise, despite some saying it was a publicity stunt by the NFL.

Still, it was history-making move by the league as it continues to break down barriers.
Thomas wasn’t the first female ref, as Shannon Eastin was a line judge for three games during the famous ref lockout in 2012. Thomas however, will be the first permanent female ref in the league.
With a female referee now taking the field on Sundays, how long will it be before there are female coaches in the league?
In an interview with ESPN Cardinals reporter Josh Weinfuss, Arians discussed the potential of there eventually being female coaches in the NFL.
"“Someone asked me yesterday, ‘When are we going to have female coaches?’” Arians said. “The minute they can prove they can make a player better, they’ll be hired.”"
Arians has always been one of the best coaches in the league when it comes to quotes and this one is no different.
While there are currently no female coaches in the league, Arians has a good point. If they can come in and help make the team better, then they will be put on a staff.
It wouldn’t be surprising to start seeing more female coaches across all major sports either. This season, the San Antonio Spurs made history when they hired former WNBA legend Becky Hammon to be an assistant under head coach Gregg Popovich.
Popovich, much like Arians, gave a rather blunt response when asked about his new assistant coach.
"”She’s another brain,” Popovich said before the game. ”She’s another person that has an opinion, has a lot of good experience about the game, and I value that highly.”"
With a franchise like the Spurs leading the way in hiring a female assistant, along with a female referee in the NFL, it’s becoming more and more clear that there will be more female referees and coaches down the line as sports leagues continue to break down long-standing barriers.
Both coaches are right, if anyone can do a good job coaching and making a team better, then they deserve a spot on a coaching staff.
Great coaches can come from anywhere, and it appears that Gregg Popovich and Bruce Arians are both very aware of the fact.
It’s no surprise that both Popovich and Arians have won multiple coach of the year awards either.
