Marcus Mariota’s stock is apparently rising in advance of the NFL Draft. According to comments from Ron Jaworski, via Philly Mag, Mariota’s former coach at Oregon, Chip Kelly, has been telling other personnel men around the league that Mariota will win more than one Lombardi Trophy. Of course there have been rumors all along that the Eagles might find some way to trade up and land Mariota. It seems like it would be a very Chip Kelly thing to do.
However, Kelly did not say that Mariota would win those Super Bowls in Philadelphia, so that still remains a rumor until the day of the draft.
On the other hand, it seems as though the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are having some second thoughts about Jameis Winston, whom everyone has more or less assumed that Tampa Bay would take immediately. Winston has been expected for awhile to be the number one pick overall and that he would go to Tampa Bay. However, the Bucs are reportedly concerned about possible community relations issues if they do decide to take Winston.
Also during Jaworski’s appearance on CSN’s Philly Sports Talk , he claimed to hear talk of the Bucs now taking Mariota first overall instead of Winston. So why is it now Mariota and not Winston? Jaworski has an explanation for that too. He explained that every year, until about a month before the draft, there’s a lull where the only ones involved in creating buzz are the scouts who are filling out the paper work and making notes on the players. However, when the distance to the draft is down to a month or so, the coaches, GMs and owners start getting involved in the process.
So very simply, the higher-ups in the Bucs organization are looking into Winston and looking into Mariota and it’s possible that they’re coming to a different conclusion than the scouts earlier. Whether that’s related to Winston’s off the field issues or a talent comparison is hard to say, though signs point towards the former.
Jaws was also asked on the same program if Kelly really believes in Mariota that strongly, then shouldn’t he try to move up in the draft and snag him. According to Jaws, the answer was yes, that if Kelly really believes in Mariota that much, he should do everything possible to get him.
