Phillip Dorsett is an under-rated prospect going into the draft, and he is not getting a lot of notoriety. Dorsett is a talented prospect who should be on your watch list.
College Production
Dorsett became a focal point of Miami’s offense during his sophomore season (age 19) where he caught 58 receptions for 842 yards and 4 TDs. Dorsett had a forgettable junior season (age 20) where he suffered a knee injury that ended his season. In eight games during his junior season, he caught 13 receptions for 272 yards and 2 touchdowns. Dorsett caught 36 receptions for 871 yards and 10 TDs with a 24.2 average yards per reception. Dorsett accounted for 15.57% of Miami’s total offensive production, 26.82% of his team’s receiving yardage, and he accounted for 38.46% of Miami’s receiving touchdowns.

Not-so notable players who compare athletically to Phillip Dorsett
Marquise Goodwin
Aldrick Robinson
Devon Wylie
Brandin Cooks and TY Hilton are very tantalizing players to be compared to. Aldrick Robinson and Marquise Goodwin are speedsters who just couldn’t put it together. Dorsett is a smaller wide receiver at 5’9″ 185 pounds. He is blazing fast with a 4.33 40-yard dash, which he has to be blazing fast to be able to compete at the NFL level with his small frame. Dorsett ran a phenomenal 6.7 3-cone time that demonstrates he has the ability to get in and out of his breaks quickly. Quick 3-cone times are an indicator that the wide receiver prospect is capable of being a good route runner.
Film Review
Dorsett stretches the field really well. From watching the tape, it is evident that Dorsett has elite speed and quickness. He makes a lot of corners look bad by beating them deep for long gains. He’s very quick at getting in and out of his breaks, which makes him very hard to cover. His size is concerning because there is a small sample size of wide receivers that have his build that are successful in the NFL. He also needs to work on his route running.
Player Value
Dorsett’s player value is going to coincide with who he gets drafted by. He is going to be very dependent on his situation. I think he’s highly athletic and could be a valuable talent, but with some of the red flags that he has, I wouldn’t want to own him if he landed in a bad situation like Titans or the Jets. Dorsett has a lot of upside due to his athleticism. He’s going to go in the 2nd round in rookie drafts, and he may crack the late first if he’s draft by a team like the Saints. Dorsett is going to be a good value in the 2nd round because his upside is through the roof. Odds of hitting on a 2nd round rookie pick is very slim, so taking a swing for the fences with Dorsett is a very smart move.
