Is Zach Mettenberger as a “poor man’s” version of New England Patriots superstar quarterback Tom Brady?

Zach Mettenberger took over the starting quarterback job late last season, and showed potential for the future. The Tennessee Titans are considering taking a quarterback with the second overall pick in this years NFL Draft, but they are also confident in the ability that Mettenberger has moving forward. It puts them in an interesting situation, although David Climer of The Tennessean revealed some interesting information about Mettenberger.

From The Tennessean:

"In short, Whisenhunt and Webster think they pulled the steal of the 2014 draft. Titans brass see Mettenberger as a poor team’s Tom Brady. He’s the quarterback. Personally, I think it’s a mistake. Nothing against Mettenberger. He’s an interesting prospect who now seems to grasp the commitment required to remain gainfully employed in the NFL."

It is an interesting view and comparison to say the least, and quite frankly doesn’t make a lot of sense after his rookie season. There are some characteristics that nearly every single quarterback shares, but they may be getting ahead of themselves a bit by seeing him as a similar player to Brady although they do agree that he is a poor man’s version.

During his rookie season last year, Mettenberger ended up throwing for 1,412 yards, eight touchdowns and seven interceptions.

They aren’t terrible numbers, but they weren’t anything special either. He definitely had a solid rookie season, but there was nothing in his play that showed the Titans that he could become a legitimate franchise caliber quarterback. That is the biggest issue for the Titans as they consider whether or not to take Jameis Winston or Marcus Mariota with the second overall pick.

At 6’5″ and 244 pounds, he is the ideal size for an NFL quarterback. There isn’t much athleticism to go along with the size, but he is a very solid all-around arm. He does have some work to do on his game, especially on the accuracy side of things after completing just 59.8 percent of his passes.

Despite some of the concerns that he still has surrounding his game, he could very well have a bright future in the NFL. He has a lot of the tools that starting quarterbacks have to have, and he is a very smart individual as well.

Obviously the comparison to Brady that Titans’ brass seems to see may be a bit of an exaggeration, but he does have some talent that the coaching staff can work with and improve.
