Young Phillies fan won’t throw back Bryce Harper HR ball (Video)
By CM Towle
Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper hit a home run against the Philadelphia Phillies and the kid who caught it refused to throw it back.
It’s not every day you catch a ball at the ballpark, or even every time you go, so it shouldn’t be too surprising that the young Phillies fan who caught Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper’s home run didn’t want to throw it back, as detailed by SI.com. Harper hit the home run into left field as the Nats visited Citizen Bank Park on Sunday. Several Phillies fans scrambled for the ball, and judging by the reaction of at least one fan, they intended to throw the ball back, thus really sticking it to the Nats for hitting a home run.
Instead, a kid caught it and stared down the other Phillies fan who kept motioning for him to throw it back. Perhaps the kid smartly realized that this was a home run hit by a guy who is on his way to being a major star, and it doesn’t really hurt the other team’s feelings when you throw it back. He wanted to hang on to that ball.

Good for him. Don’t fall for that homer peer pressure nonsense, keep that ball.
The game ended up being a competitive one between the Phillies and Nats. It went to 10 innings with the Nats eventually prevailing in a score of 4 to 3. It might be the sort of win that can pull the Nats out of their early season slump. They currently sit at 2-4, near the bottom of the NL East. The very bottom is held by the Miami Marlins who aren’t really doing much with their improved roster so far this season.
But this was a hard-fought win for the Nationals and might be just the thing to get them going. Harper homered, as mentioned, and Clint Robinson had three hits, while Wilson Ramos drove in the winning run in the 10th inning.
“It’s always good for morale when you squeeze out wins like this,” starter Max Scherzer said via ESPN.
It should be. Scherzer also said that his fastball command was off, but his off-speed pitches saved him as he kept good command with those. The Phillies got one run off of him in the fifth, but the rest came off relievers.
As for the Phillies, they now sit at 3-3 in the NL East. They will be headed to New York to face the Mets in that team’s home opener of the 2015 MLB season.
