The NBA have given the green light to Mexico to hose a regular season game between the Boston Celtics and the Sacramento Kings
Basketball fans in Mexico only have to wait until December 3rd 2015 to see a regular season game in their home country. The NBA announced Tuesday that the tie between the Celtics and Kings will take place at the end of the year in Mexico City.
Tickets for the game will go on sale on April 24th, it’s the 22nd time the NBA have held a game in Mexico while it will be the third time Mexico City have been given the honor to host the game. The Celtics have a massive global audience and as such are a great choice for the global game. The co-owner had this to say about the decision-
"“Fans all over the world know about Celtic pride… We couldn’t be more proud that we’re adding to our legacy by bringing our game and our team to Mexico.” – Celtics co-owner Wyc Grousbeck said in a statement."
It’s a big announcement for both sets of fans and it’ll add an extra dimension to the game in December. There will no doubt be a different atmosphere at the game with a different culture of fans in attendance. The novelty of the American game being played internationally has caught the imagination of a lot of NBA fans. Fans around the world have reacted to the announcement on social media.
The annual event has garnered a lot of attention over the years but in 2013 it was a struck by an unfortunate event that saw a game between the Wolves and Spurs postponed due to an electrical fire in the stadium. The game couldn’t be played as scheduled and was forced to take place in Minnesota.
Obviously such an unfortunate event is rare and could have happened anywhere, but we’re all hoping it was jsut a freak accident that won’t happen again. It would be more than a little disappointing for all the Mexican basketball fans that will be getting tickets for the game.
