If DeMarre Carroll has his way in free agency, he could be playing for the Knicks next season.

Apparently someone still has faith in the New York Knicks.

Atlanta Hawks‘ small forward DeMarre Carroll said yesterday that he is interested in playing for Knicks next season. Carroll, who will be a free agent come July, seems eager to embrace the bright lights of New York City.

When asked if the Knicks could be a free-agency landing spot for him, Carroll answered affirmatively:

"“Most definitely,” he said. “When guys talk about placing in certain places – they talk about Madison Square Garden and Staples Center. Those two places. New York has a lot to offer but at the end of the season, I’ll let me agent do that. We’ll keep our options and hopefully it will work out for the best.”"

The real interest from Carroll, though, seems to stem from his relationship with Knicks head coach Derek Fisher. The two worked out together a few years ago and have developed a mutual respect. According to a source, Fisher is interested in the possibility of bringing Carroll to New York.

Carroll’s agent, Mark Bartelstein, currently represents three players on the Knicks roster: Tim Hardaway Jr., Lou Amundson and Jason Smith.

No need to worry yet, Hawks fans. Carroll also stressed the importance of making a playoff run this year. “Free agency, that’s still a long ways,” Carroll said. “We’re trying to go deep in the postseason. My main focus is to go deep.”

Carroll, who was drafted 27th overall by the Grizzlies in 2009, entered yesterday’s game averaging 12.4 points, 5.4 rebounds and a 49 percent shooting. His niche, though, is defense. Carroll, a candidate for one of the All-Defensive teams, has found a fit in head coach Mike Buldenhozer’s system.

Additionally, Carroll’s impact in Atlanta goes beyond his basketball prowess. Prior to last night’s game, in which the Knicks logged a 112-108 victory, Carroll was awarded the Jason Collier Memorial Trophy. The trophy, named after late Hawks center Jason Collier, is presented each year to the player who best exemplifies Collier’s characteristics as a community ambassador.

The Knicks, who sit at 17-64 (5th in the Atlantic Division), could use a defender as adept as Carroll. Though truly they could use anyone who can play the game of basketball. For now, they should focus on trying to lose as many games as possible.
