Former teammate Brandon Spikes confused by Aaron Hernandez guilty verdict

Brandon Spikes took to Twitter to voice his displeasure regarding the guilty verdict against former Patriots and Gators teammate Aaron Hernandez.

The guilty verdict that many expected to be levied against former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was passed down on Wednesday. With it, the judge rules that Hernandez would spend life in jail for the first degree murder of Odin Lloyd.

Hernandez was on trial for the June 2013 shooting death of former friend Odin Lloyd after a disagreement between he and Hernandez. Hernandez then rallied two other friends, Carlos Ortiz and Ernest Wallace, to help him carry out the murder and then hide the evidence of the crime.

The trial, which has been ongoing since January, was built on the backbone of 130 witnesses and there seemed to be little doubt as to the guilt of Hernandez in the crime. The only question was whether or not the prosecution could land a guilty verdict on a 1st Degree Murder charge built on what some viewed as circumstantial evidence.

Still, those closest to Hernandez were not so easily swayed as to his guilt. That included former teammate Brandon Spikes, who played with Aaron Hernandez as a member of the Florida Gators and with the New England Patriots.

I’m not sure what Spikes is so confused about. The mounting evidence against Aaron Hernandez in the case could only lead to a guilty verdict. Given his ties to other murders in the area and the obvious attempts to cover up a crime, the jury and judge had no choice but to find Hernandez guilty and to sentence him to the harshest penalty available to them under the law.

Now, Spikes isn’t the first former teammate to come to aid of Aaron Hernandez either. Mike and Maurkice Pouncey, who both played with Hernandez at Florida as well, famously wore “Free Hernandez” hats shortly after the tight end was arrested for the crime. Maurkice would eventually apologize for the hat, saying “I fully recognize the seriousness of the situation involving my former teammate, and I regret that my actions appear to make light of that serious situation.” However, brother Mike refused to apologize.

Of course, Spikes also criticized the internet for their cruel jokes in regards to Hernandez’ “plight”.

Maybe he’s alluding to tweets like these:

Yup, the internet can be a cruel place. Everyone has an opinion to cast and unfortunately, not all of them are going to agree with you Mr. Spikes. You may just want to tack on a few days of respite from the Twitter-verse, just to be safe.
