Grant Hill is still trying really hard to buy the Atlanta Hawks
By Josh Hill
The Atlanta Hawks are in the hunt for an NBA title this season, but they’re also up for sale and Grant Hill is trying really hard to make sure he’s the one who buys them.
It’s been a long season for the Atlanta Hawks and one that isn’t going to end when the regular season does today. That’s because the Hawks, like a free agent in a contract year, have played up their value on the open market by clinching the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference Playoffs and are on a run that could end in the NBA Finals.

Their value as a franchise was already high, but the season the Hawks have put together this year has only raised their value to buyers — the most eager of whom seems to be Grant Hill.
According to Bloomberg, Hill’s group now includes billionaire Tony Ressler, and the group is once again making a bid to buy the Hawks
"Ares Management LP’s billionaire co-founder Tony Ressler has entered the bidding for the National Basketball Association’s Atlanta Hawks, fronting a group that includes former All-Star Grant Hill, three people familiar with the matter said."
Hill’s group recently dropped out of the running briefly while they reshuffled the makeup of their investors. Now that Ressler is onboard, it appears that Hill’s group is back in the thick of things and may be back to being the frontrunners to purchase the Hawks.
It would mark yet another NBA player who retired from the game only to go on and own a team in the future. Michael Jordan has already done this with the Charlotte Bobcats and others like Hill, Kevin Garnett and legends such as Phil Jackson have all moved into positions where they either want to own a team or are working their way up.
Garnett may be in the running to buy the Minnesota Timberwolves in the future while Phil Jackson moved a step closer to the owner’s seat by graduating from player, to head coach to VP of operations over the course of his career.
It’s a little different with Grant Hill though, as he’ll have gone from player to analyst to owner — a massive leap not many expected him to take.
Still, Hill’s group seems like a solid one and it appears we could have resolution on the Hawks ownership situation not long after their season ends.
