Things got a little heated on multiple occasions Tuesday night between the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies.

Just the fact that Matt Harvey returned to the Citi Field mound for the first time since August of 2013 made Monday’s game between the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies an exciting occasion. The game itself provided plenty of fireworks.

In the fifth inning of New York’s 6-5 win, Harvey drilled Phillies second baseman in the back with a 95-mph fastball.

Utley had homered off of Harvey back in the first to deaden some of the buzz at Citi Field, only adding to the drama.

Hilariously, the Mets coaches called for an intentional walk two out on a runner on third before Harvey drilled Utley. As Harvey is coming off of Tommy John surgery, he must be mindful of his pitch count.

The tension started in the second inning when Philadelphia starter David Buchanan hit both shortstop Wilmer Flores and outfielder Michael Cuddyer. Cuddyer was forced to leave the game with a wrist injury as a result of the hit by pitch.

It appeared Buchanan hit both Mets accidentally, as he was all over the place during the inning. Still, just about any pitcher would retaliate (right or wrong), so Harvey can’t be blamed too much here.

Harvey claimed that the pitch just “got away.” Given Harvey’s mark of 2.09 walks per nine innings in his career, that seems a little doubtful.

It wasn’t Harvey’s best outing (given his lofty standards) and Utley would add another home run in the eighth inning, but the Mets would still hold on for the victory.
