The best players from Major League Soccer will take on English side Tottenham Hotspur this summer

It was announced that Tottenham Hotspur will be the lucky team to feature in this year’s All-Star game. The tie will take place at DSG park which is outside Denver. There will no doubt be a lot of people pleased with the announcement as Tottenham have a large following Stateside. However, not everyone is delighted with the decision. After all, last year’s opponents were Bayern Munich.

The All-Star game has been in existence in its current format since 2005, when English side Fulham took on the stars of America in a game that ended 4-1 to the All-Stars. It comprises of select players from the MLS who go on one team against an International team that usually differs each year. (Manchester United played back to back in 2010/11).

There have been a host of top clubs to play in the States and it’s a great way to get more Americans involved in the sport. If the average American hears that there’s one of the top teams in the world playing in their hometown, they’ll probably go. Likewise, it’s an opportunity for the avid American fan to see their favorite players from the MLS take on some of the greatest teams in Europe.

There have been some mixed reviews of the announcment, some people feel that the game isn’t one to look forward to.

Tottenham haven’t been enjoying much success this season, currently sitting in 7th spot and four points off a Champions League spot. They lost the Capital One Cup final to rivals Chelsea earlier this year and since then haven’t had a lot to play for.

One thing going for the London club however is young English striker Harry Kane breaking on to the scene in tremendous fashion. Kane has been prolific in front of goal since earning a spot in the first team, one wonders where Spurs would be without him.

Whether or not you’re pleased with the decision for Tottenham to feature in the MLS All-Star game, one thing to look forward to is seeing that young man in action…If a good club don’t buy him between now and then.
