Saints cornerback Keenen Lewis will deliver the goods if he has to change his jersey number, buying fans a replacement jersey if needed.

Saints cornerback Keenan Lewis apprears to understand how much of an investment it is for fans to wear the jerseys of their favorite players.

Lewis, who currently wears No. 28, said on his Instagram account that he is thinking about switching to No. 21 or No. 23, according to Katherine Terrill of NOLA.com. He settled on No.21.

“21 is for Deion (Sanders) my idol and 23 is the first jersey I wore in the Superdome,” he wrote.

Lewis promised to buy fans who had already purchased a No. 28 jersey, his new one as long as they provide him with the receipt.

It seems like the New Orleans native empathizes with the fans after they witnessed an offseason where so many players left the team. Most notably, Tight End Jimmy Graham, who was traded to the Seattle Seahawks. Also, he asked the team for a similar deal when regarding his contract status.

"“The only thing I know is that I had a meeting and they promised that they never had any plans to let me go,” Lewis told the New Orleans Times-Picayune. “They said that I was in the plans for the upcoming years. They told me I was going to be part of the plan. We didn’t talk about any numbers, or the contract.”"

This was classy gesture on Lewis’ part. After all, we hear so many negative things when it comes to NFL players these days. It is a shame that players like Lewis are often thrown in the mix.

Of course, Lewis isn’t the first player or team to replace jerseys for fans. Most notably, the New England Patriots allowed fans to trade in the jersey of Aaron Hernandez for that of another player after Hernandez was arrested and charged with murdering Odin Lloyd. It was a classy move by the team to think of their fans, but also in a much different context than Lewis’ decision.

Also, as someone who has a bad history with timing and sports jerseys, it’s good to see that someone gets it. My history includes getting my hands on a Blackhawks Dustin Byfuglien jersey in my size the same day the team traded him to Atlanta. I was livid as you could imagine. So I know what it is like to have a jersey rendered useless in seconds. Not fun at all.

One of the best fan interactions involving jerseys in recent memory included former Los Angeles Dodger Matt Kemp. See here:

I’m not sure how someone could top that but let’s hope Lewis doesn’t renege on the deal.
