Cubs announcer calls Kris Bryant DP ‘the best in the history of this ballpark’
This Chicago Cubs announcer poked a little fun at the Kris Bryant hype train.
All eyes were on Wrigley Field on Friday afternoon as megaprospect Kris Bryant made his much-anticipated major league debut for the Chicago Cubs. Bryant’s first action came in the top of the first inning, when he started a 5-4-3 double play.
That got the crowd at Wrigley buzzing, as Bryant was able to handle the initial nerves and Cubs fans were eagerly waiting for him to do something. Chicago announcer Jim Deshaies was apparently really excited, according to ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick.
Bryant’s debut is a huge benchmark for an organization that is moving towards contention. Still, in 101 years of playing at Wrigley, the Cubs have probably turned some bigger 5-4-3 double plays.
Anyone who has listened to Deshaies, now in his third year of doing color commentary for WGN, can likely detect a hint of sarcasm in that statement. As big as Bryant’s debut is, talking about it since the start of spring training was probably growing a little tiresome for announcers and analysts.
Bryant has been unable to to build off the momentum of that huge double play, going 0-2 with two strikeouts so far.
