Fantasy Football: What Can We Expect From Zach Mettenberger?
By Dave Fuqua
What can we expect from Zach Mettenberger?
There is becoming an increasing amount of hype building around Zach Mettenberger for the Titans QB this year. So far Mettenberger remains a huge question mark for the team, but nevertheless the Titans seem intent on passing on a QB with their #2 draft pick this year. That suggests that the Titans have seen something in Mettenberger that leads them to believe he can be a top-notch starting QB in the NFL.

We will start out by talking a bit about Zach Mettenberger’s games last season. Mettenberger made five starts for the Titans last year and had three pretty solid games. In those three games he averaged throwing for 302 yards. He also tossed two TDs and one interception in each game. Pretty decent numbers for a rookie QB taking over mid-season. Eventually Mettenberger’s season came to a premature ending with a torn ACL which is another question mark for the LSU product as he heads into his sophomore season.
Recently The Nashville Tennessean reported that the QB has taken the lead in organizing some workouts which is showing some nice initiative. There are also rumors that the Titans could trade for current Chargers QB Phillip Rivers, but usually those things never come to fruition. I realize that where there is smoke there is fire, but you can’t expect the Titans to not do their due diligence and see what their draft pick could net in a trade.
Now we will assume that the Titans will keep heading in the direction they are and wind up with Zach Mettenberger as the starting QB. With the numbers that he posted in his three starts and assuming that he can pull those kinds of numbers in roughly 3 out of every four starts we can easily make a case for drafting him as a QB2 with nice upside. The Titans have a nice WR corps which will find speedy WR Justin Hunter and Kendall Wright all a season better than last year. The Titans also added Harry Douglas and could address another wide-out in the Draft coming up. The Titans could use another speedster to open up the game for Bishop Sankey or whoever will slot in as the early down back.
The Titans feel that they were lucky and had Mettenberger slip to them after a failed drug test blew up his draft stock for last year’s draft. Mettenberger has the tools that NFL teams are looking for in a franchise QB. He has the size, the arm and is loaded with poise. He has the body needed to take hits and beyond failing that drug test has shown he has the smarts needed to play the QB position.
Zach Mettenberger could easily prove to be a worthy fantasy football QB, but he is certainly a guy who is worthy of a late round flier in fantasy football leagues to be your backup and have some QB1 upside. Mettenberger is also a QBthat should be owned in dynasty leagues as well. I would suggest teams that have aging QBS such as Peyton Manning to consider adding MEttenberger as a future replacement for when Manning eventually retires and hopefully steps in to his coaching career.
