One of the burning questions about wrestling history is why exactly Shawn Michaels never took the opportunity that a lot of other WWE stars took in the mid 1990s to leave for WCW, which was far and away the hottest wrestling promotion from about 1996 to late 1998. It’s especially perplexing seeing as a few of his best friends, most notably Scott Hall and Kevin Nash, made the move to help make WCW the hottest organization on the planet.

Well, Michaels recently revealed that he did indeed have the urge to make the move, but he was talked out of it by the most prominent person in WWE.

During his recent appearance on the Ross Report with former WWE broadcaster Jim Ross, Michaels made the revelation of wanting to leave to be with his buddies, but Vince McMahon talked him out of it.

“I thought about it, but there’s two things. I went to Vince and said ‘Let me go. I’m miserable here, I wanna go down and be with my buddies.’ He said just no. I’m under contract with WWE, so I couldn’t. But there was a time I wanted to go.” Michaels told Ross.

The Heartbreak Kid would also go on to say that Vince went even further with his explanation, noting that WCW would not let Michaels be as creative in the ring as he was in WWE, and that would ultimately end up hurting him in the end.

Of course, Vince is definitely right in that regard. It was so clustered that time in WCW, that no matter his name recognition or who his friends were, Shawn Michaels would have quickly got lost in the shuffle like everyone else that was there at the time.

Plus, you also have to take into account the back injury that eventually landed Michaels on the shelf for four years.

Bottom line: Going to WCW would have been a complete disaster for Shawn Michaels, and he should be thankful that Vince had that talk with him.
