Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again” has broken the Spotify streaming record with 21 million plays in only one week.
Wiz Khalifa has broken Spotify’s streaming record with his tribute track to fallen Furious 7 star, Paul Walker. The song, titled “See You Again,” was released March 17, 2015 and quickly racked up a hefty stream count on Spotify. The song now holds the title for most streams in a single day with 4.2 million Spotify plays on April 13th, 2015. The song also now holds the most streams in one week with 21.9 million streams for the week ending on April 12th.
The song, which also features singer Charlie Puth, peaked at number one on over 15 music charts. The official music video has over 77 million views on YouTube with over one million YouTube likes.
Khalifa’s song is the perfect storm of hit songs. It is a good song on its own so fans of Khalifa already have a reason to listen to it. The Puth sounds great on the hook and his voice is simply angelic. Also, the song is so incredibly catchy that it will get stuck in your head whether you want it to or not.
The song really cashes in as a memorial piece to deceased actor, Paul Walker. Vin Diesel has been adamant about the importance of his relationship between himself and Paul. Khalifa took this heart-tugging relationship and plastered it all over the music video. Shot after shot shows Walker interacting with Diesel with the final scene showing the two ride off into the sunset on separate roads. It’s an onslaught that keeps gluttons of emotional punishment coming back for more.
“See You Again” perfectly utilizes the contagious catchiness of pop music while also achieving an emotional depth not often reached by pop songs. Not only that, but the song is very relatable. Who hasn’t lost someone who they felt incredibly close to whether via death or some other catalyst? “See You Again,” is a song anyone can listen to and sympathize with. Khalifa is now sitting on a mountain of money and Spotify records built from a catchy pop song structure, tugged heartstrings, and Paul Walker’s death. Well played, Khalifa.
