After a solid season in 2014 in which the Miami Marlins seemed to overachieve, manager Mike Redmond might be on the hot seat after a slow 2015 start.

It seems like the leash is getting shorter and shorter these days for professional coaches. The newest case of this phenomenon is the one regarding Miami Marlins manager, Mike Redmond. The third-year manager has brought the Marlins out of baseball’s basement and into the light of possible contenders.

More from Miami Marlins

Miami hasn’t had much to cheer about in recent years as the former Florida Marlins haven’t made a playoff appearance 2003 when they won the World Series. In fact, this team hasn’t finished above .500 since 2009 and has won more than 90 games just twice in its 22-year history.

Mike Redmond, former MLB catcher, has been trying to change that losing culture, and he had done a solid job in the past two years of turning this team from embarrassment to respectable.

In his first year with the Marlins in 2013, the team finished just 62-100 while trailing the NL East division leader by 34 games. Last year, the Marlins finished 15 games better at 77-85, just 19 games out of first place.

This year, however, Miami has been playing as poorly as any team in the majors, posting just a 3-10 record, second-worst in the league, and owning the worst ERA out there at 5.10.

It’s safe to say this team is struggling with no end in sight. Miami is desperately hoping to get stud pitcher Jose Fernandez back by June while also hoping Giancarlo Stanton snaps out of his cold streak and becomes the player he was a season ago.

All of these struggles may have landed Redmond on the hot seat, according to the Miami Herald.

The Herald also claimed that the organization is already beginning to look into possible replacements for the manager who recently got a three-year extension following the 2014 season.

One such managerial possibility is Wally Backman, the current manager of the New York Mets‘ triple-A affiliate. While he has no real managing experience in the majors, his name has come up, according to the Herald‘s sources.

While Backman is a name that has been mentioned in regards to this job, I think the team could go after a long-shot and a guy who already has managerial experience in the National League, Kirk Gibson.

I know, it seems like a ridiculous statement, but Gibson has the experience and has seen some success with it. Marlins’ owner Jeffrey Loria is known for hiring guys with big personalities who can light a fire under his players and Gibson, although often monotone, could be that guy.

Despite all the speculation, Redmond is still the guy until further notice.
