The Philadelphia Eagles have too many quarterbacks, so why not try and move one to another position?

The Philadelphia Eagles will give quarterback G.J. Kinne a chance to win a job as a wide receiver or a role on special teams, according to a report from Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports.

As Garafolo notes, the Eagles just don’t have enough snaps to go around at the quarterback position. Sam Bradford and Mark Sanchez are the clear-cut top two, while Matt Barkley and the newly signed Tim Tebow will supposedly battle it out for third.

Kinne was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the New York Jets in 2012 before bouncing around a couple of minor football leagues and eventually landing with Philadelphia in February 2013. At 6-2 234 pounds with excellent athleticism, Kinne could be a good candidate to succeed at another position.

During his college career at Tulsa, Kinne rushed 434 times for 1,359 yards. Chip Kelley is one of the most creative offensive minds in the nation and will help Kinne find a role if there’s some ability there.

Given the Eagles relative depth at quarterback and lack of options at receiver, a move would make sense. A few quarterbacks have had some success converting to other positions.

Brad Smith, FA

The Eagles need to look no further than their own roster in 2014 to find a successful quarterback conversion. A star quarterback at Missouri, Smith has thrown a total of 10 passes in the professional ranks but has managed to last nine seasons in the league.

Smith hasn’t been too succesful as a receiver in the NFL, although he has caught 104 career passes. His niche has been kick returns, as Smith has returned four kicks for touchdowns in his career and averaged 28.1 yards on 50 returns back in 2010.

Now a free agent, Smith’s role in Philadelphia could very well be filled by Kinne.

Julian Edelman, NE

After being a three-year starting quarterback at Kent State, Edelman has totaled over 2,000 yards receiving during the last two seasons with the New England Patriots. A much different type of player than Kinne, Edelman fits perfectly as a slot receiver in New England’s offense and is a dangerous punt returner.

Michael Robinson, retired

There’s been a few quarterbacks to convert to special teams or receivers, but Robinson may have been the only fullback. Robinson lasted eight years in the NFL and spent four as a succesful lead blocker for Marshawn Lynch and the Seattle Seahawks.

Denard Robinson, JAC

One of the most electrifying dual-threat college quarterbacks in recent memory, Robinson was famously listed as an”offensive weapon” on the Jacksonville Jaguars’ roster. Robinson isn’t playing quarterback anymore, but he looks like a capable NFL starter at the running back position.

Antwaan Randle El, retired

Perhaps the most successful conversion, Randle El did it all, throwing six touchdown passes in his career and totaling 4,467 receving yards in nine seasons. Randle El is the only wide receiver to throw a touchdown pass in Super Bowl history, as he found Hines Ward for a 43-yard score in Super Bowl XL.

Tim Tebow, PHI?

Kelly couldn’t possibly be thinking about giving Tebow regular QB snaps with all the other options, could he? A move to tight end or fullback could be on the way, although nobody’s been able to predict what Kelly might do this offseason.
