That whole saga is back in the news because Winston brought it up on ESPN’s Draft Academy, where he talked to former San Francisco 49ers head coach John Harbaugh about how to answer certain questions.
They point out that Winston left it out instead of addressing it, then he asks how he should address it and reveals some interesting details about the incident that we hadn’t known before.
“How am I supposed to handle it, like, if I just got it for free,” Winston asked.
Harbaugh caught off guard, follows up with: “You got them for free? Explain that to me.”
Long story short, Winston says he went into Publix to buy a birthday cake for his friend and met a “dude,” who is presumably an employee of Publix. This “dude” told Winston that “anytime you come in here, I got you.”
Winston was given something for free that day, then came back the day of the crab leg incident and was again given them by the same guy. So he left thinking he was being hooked up, but someone else who worked there called and reported that he left without paying for them, which is true.
Harbaugh for his part, doesn’t let Winston or tell him to use it as an explanation. He sticks with how he initially told Winston to handle it, “came in got some crab legs, people in the store reported that I didn’t pay for them and they’re right.” Harbaugh says to add an “I messed up and I learned from it” at the end.
The only question is whether or not this is true, but you can decide that for yourself.
