3. These aren’t the same Texas Rangers

Josh Hamilton isn’t returning to a Rangers team that is consistently competing for the World Series like they were when he left.

After a couple of struggling seasons, the Rangers have gone through a change of their roster. The manager of those teams that Hamilton played on, Ron Washington, is gone. The second baseman, Ian Kinsler is gone. So is the ace of those teams, C.J. Wilson.

The Rangers still have Adrian Beltre and Elvis Andrus, but that’s just about all that they have left from a team that was the crown jewel of the American League for a stretch run.

Instead, the Rangers are competing for high draft picks and letting young talent take the field alongside veteran players. They are currently around the .500 mark to begin the year and the younger players are getting key at-bats that will go a long way in building their careers.

Adding Hamilton takes away from those at-bats that guys like Delino DeShields Jr., Jake Smolinski and Leonys Martin could be getting.

The Rangers must leave the past in the past and continue to build forward and stock the minors with talent that can help them compete again for World Series titles in the future.

Sure for the fans, they might welcome back Hamilton with open arms after everything he has done for their franchise and they should do that, but at the same time swan songs don’t win games, they just bring back memories.
