If you’ve ever spent any time at a ball field around 4 or 5 PM, you know that is the time when the birds–most notably those annoying pigeons–hang around the yard waiting to pick up scraps and fly all around the big beautiful ballpark with great recreational gusto.

And yet the Yankees made the mistake, knowing just that, of scheduling their Saturday afternoon game against their in-city rival, the New York Mets, at 4 PM ET–just the time those pigeons were sure to come around the yard.

Third baseman Chase Headley of the New York Yankees of course had nothing to do with the scheduling. But once on the diamond he could do his best to get rid of the pigeons from the field of play.

It’s only appropriate that this took place in New York, the setting of the most famous comedy of this or any generation, Seinfeld, which often interplayed with the Yankees and Mets, not to mention one of the more famous “We had a deal” lines from George Costanza, played by Jason Alexander.

The only problem with the analogy to Seinfeld is that in this case it was the Yankees–the humans–not the birds, who broke the deal.
