Virginia Tech will wear alternate helmets modeled after Navy’s helmets for their Military Appreciation Day game this September.

Virginia Tech has unveiled a new alternate helmet for their September 12th game against Furman. The white, maroon, and orange helmets, labeled as “White Effect,” will be worn as a part of Military Appreciation Day. The alternate helmets bear obvious similarities to Navy’s football helmet.

Both helmets feature a tricolor scheme with white on top, a colored strip underneath, followed by another color at the base of the helmet. Also, the team logo’s are placed in pretty much the exact same spot on the sides of the helmet. The helmets are even held in the same way.

It is a nice nod towards the Navy as well as those who serve in the military branch.

Judging by a picture posted to twitter by the team’s official account, it seems that the helmet will be the only item changed for the game. The team’s uniform jerseys and pants will not be altered for Military Appreciation Day.

This isn’t the first time Virginia Tech has taken the field wearing alternate jerseys. In 2010 VT wore the all black Nike Pro Combat uniforms in their game against Boise State. The uniforms were generally heralded as looking amazing. They certainly added some flair to the team’s appearance.

It’s always fun when a team changes up their appearance. It gives the fans something to talk about and can break up the monotony of the typical plain jersey. It adds even more meaning to an alternate uniform when it is done to pay respect to America’s service men and women. It is certainly a great sign of respect from the Virginia Tech football team and university.
