In the ring of professional boxing, fans rarely get to see what true work is put in before the final result that months of training have produced. When fans think of training for boxing they probably recollect the training montages in the Rocky films where Sylvester Stalone can be seen punching meat or running up stairs to the sound of “Eye of the Tiger” playing in the background. While these scenes are extremely intense and memorable, they are hardly a true representation to what preparing for an actual boxing match actually takes.

In the case of Manny Pacquiao, the fight of his life is coming up this weekend, so the months leading up to it have seen plenty of blood, sweat, and tears in the gym. Nike just released a video to give boxing fans a glimpse as to what Pacquiao puts himself through to prepare for a fight.

The humble Pacquiao is seen doing a number of workouts including sprints, crunches, and foot movement drills. “Preparing physically, spiritually, and mentally will ensure victory” is Pacquiao’s motto going into to each training session.

The workouts are extremely different from anything we would see in a Rocky film. There is no music in the background nor any angry punches to meat bags. Instead, Pacquiao just gracefully goes about each grueling workout as if they are another mundane task of his day. He says that he is “excited” by the prospect of training for the fight. Almost as if he is a little kid whose parents told him he would get ice cream if he properly cleaned his room.

However, I think that Pacquiao’s attempt at devaluing his training process isn’t as boring as he makes it out to be. While he is doing each workout, I see a drive in his eyes. With each step during a sprint or each rep on a crunch it is clear that something is motivating him to beat Mayweather. Something that is not just the prospect of training for a fight. This is the type of humble attitude that creates a champion. So come May 2nd, I wouldn’t be surprised if Pacquiao comes out on top. Even if his motivation techniques are vastly different than anything Rocky would do.
