The NFL has suspended Dolphins defensive end Dion Jordan after another violation of the league’s substance abuse policy, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Jordan was the third overall selection by the Dolphins in the 2013 Draft. In addition to the latest suspension, Jordan also violated the league’s substance-abuse policy in 2014 and was suspended for four games.

Though Jordan did not actually test positive for one of the banned substances, his sample was diluted, which counts as a strike. His prior strike is the reason why his most recent ban is so long.

According to Schefter, Jordan has decided not to appeal the NFL’s ruling. Therefore, the ban will stay.

Not a good look for a player that was thought so highly of just two years ago.

Also, the suspension comes at an interesting and critical time for NFL teams – just two days before the start of the 2015 NFL Draft and one day after the arrest of Shane Ray. Ray, out of the University of Missouri, was one of the Draft’s top-rate players. That is, until he was pulled over for speeding and arrested for possession of marijuana. Now it appears as though his draft stock is plummeting. Poor timing to be sure.

Both Jordan and Ray’s unfortunate incidents are sure to make organizations think long and hard about a player’s off-the-field past prior to picking him.

Also, according to Schefter, the Dolphins and the Eagles were close to a trade that would send Jordan to Philly. As a result of Jordan’s diluted test and subsequent suspension, the deal is now off.

Seems like the Eagles really dodged a bullet here.
