Well, wonder no more. James Politi and Luke Daly of JamesPoliti.com posted their images of what they imagine hypothetical NBA teams’ uniforms would look like.
Each NBA franchise’s helmet is posted alongside an explanation of the themes and rationale that led to each choice.
Politi, a self-described “unemployed graphic designer who misses the NFL and has to watch basketball with his friends,” has taken it upon himself to design each team’s potential helmet. He imposed two limitations: no copying and pasting existing logos, and no use of basketballs anywhere in the image.
The full gallery is available here, and we don’t want to spoil all of them, but let’s delve into a couple of the helmets in a little more depth. Some of them work perfectly, while others seem to have been a bit more tricky to translate.
Boston Celtics
There are no Irish-themed football teams, and that’s a shame, because the green and white shamrock look seems to work well on the football helmet.
Brooklyn Nets
As Politi writes, “it’s as though Jay-Z knew that one day an unemployed graphic designer would try to translate NBA logos into football helmets.” He’s right about that; this one works perfectly.
Cleveland Cavaliers
Many have wondered what it would be like if LeBron played football, but they probably weren’t wondering about the helmet he would wear. Well, here it is anyway, a nice use of the maroon and gold color scheme and the Cavs’ alternate logo.
New York Knicks
This one is basically just the Mets logo. They’re both New York franchises with a similar history of sadness, and neither wears football helmets, so I guess it works out.
Orlando Magic
Hmm, where have I seen that star before….?
Houston Rockets
WHAT HOW IS THAT A ROCKET
With that helmet on top of James Harden’s beard, they’d be unstoppable.
