In the second inning of a Tuesday night game between the Diamondbacks and Rockies, the 22-year-old rookie pitcher for the Arizona Diamondbacks, Archie Bradley, took a 115 mph line drive to the face off the bat of Colorado Rockies‘ Carlos Gonzalez.

The ball hit him on his right cheek, and Bradley was down for several minutes with trainers tending to him, players crouching around the mound, and concern being shown in both dugouts and all over the stadium. After a few minutes Bradley, assisted by trainers, was able to walk to the dugout and indicated the crowd that he was okay with a thumbs up gesture.

Carlos Gonzalez said after the game that it ruined is night, “For me as a hitter it’s a nightmare… Seeing one of those guys going down, especially a guy like him who is really young…” Fortunately for Gonzalez, and more importantly, Bradley, the ball hit him in the cheek and not a few inches further to the right.

Bradley was taken to a Phoenix hospital where they only found minor sinus cavity damage. No doubt he looks a lot worse than he feels. All in all, temporary over-sized face aside, the damage was far less catastrophic than it could have been.

Bradley sent this tweet from the hospital to let fans know he was okay.

This is the third time in six weeks that MLB pitchers have taken a line drive to the head. Hopefully we don’t see this trend continuing.
