The Orioles vs. White Sox game is being played in front of zero paying fans on Wednesday, and the first pitch was as lonely as you’d expect.

The city of Baltimore is on fire, but baseball is still being played.

That’s reality on Wednesday afternoon, as the Baltimore Orioles and Chicago White Sox are playing a game in front of no one as their day-game has been closed to the public. This was to protect fans who have been instructed to stay inside while protesters continue to riot over the death of Freddie Gray, and it’s a sad and lonely scene to take in.

The game is being played in front of very few people, and the first pitch was one of the loneliest things to ever happen in baseball.

There are some wondering if the game should even be played, as there is debate over the type of statement that it sends. While Baltimore burns outside the confines of Camden Yards, baseball is being played inside of it’s lonely little bubble.

This is cute for something that Ken Burns can put in his next ‘Baseball’ documentary, but it’s debatable as to whether or not the game should be played. On the one hand, it’s very romantic for baseball to press on no matter what but is the game being played at the expense of the community?

It’s an odd juxtaposition, and it’s borderline offensive in a lot of ways. The quiet, lonely atmosphere at Camden Yards is in the middle of social chaos and disruption outside of the gates. This can easily come across as morbidly detached and defiant, but it’s happening anyways.

It’s open to debate as to the message this fan-less game sends, but it’s a lonely sight that we hopefully won’t see the likes of ever again.
