Since the Chicago Cubs hired general manager Joe Maddon this offseason the Tampa Bay Rays have alleged that the Cubs had broken tampering rules by contacting the manager while he was under contract. Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein was adamant from the get go in his denial of this accusation. Theo Epstein made it clear that the Cubs had no prior knowledge of Joe Maddon’s departure. The Rays, however, didn’t buy it.

The Rays filed tampering charges six months ago and the league has finally concluded its investigation. The league has ruled that the Cubs were innocent of any tampering charges. As it stands the Cubs and Maddon deny any wrongdoing, so without some sort of evidence to the contrary, they pretty much have to take them at their word.

If the league had found evidence of tampering then they would have determined the appropriate punishment which could have been in the form of fines or the transfer of a player from the Cubs to the Rays. The Rays would have likely had to receive some sort of compensation from the Cubs, but that’s not going to happen.

The Cubs are off to a hot start and they can stop worrying about possible penalties on the horizon and focus on winning games, as well as trying to bring a championship to the city of Chicago.
