The Arizona Cardinals, of course, started last season as hot as any team in the NFL, looking like the front-runner for the No. 1 seed in the ultracompetitive NFC midway through the season, before folding late in the year as Bruce Arians was forced to rotate the quarterback position among three players—none of them being Carson Palmer.

The Cardinals still managed to hang on for the first Wild Card spot—5th seed overall—but lost to the horrific 7-9 NFC South winning Carolina Panthers in the Wild Card round. At the season’s finish, speculation abounded about superstar wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald’s future.

The two sides reworked a contract to keep Fitzgerald in Phoenix at least for this season, and the foreseeable future. Wide receiver, thus, seems like one spot on the offense not in urgent need of a playmaker. For that matter, the Cardinals figure to be comfortable with Carson Palmer under center for now.

They also like 2014 fourth-round pick Logan Thomas from Virginia Tech as a developmental prospect and potential replacement for Palmer in the future.

Instead, the buzz surrounding the Cardinals is their need for a superstar running back, and alleged interest in the Vikings’ All-Pro back, Adrian Peterson. If they cannot get a deal done with Minnesota, they could also make a play for Georgia running back Todd Gurley or wait until a later round and take advantage of the incredible depth in this year’s running back class.

They are also likely to look for someone to rush the passer, as they have been average at best in Arians’ first two seasons in the desert in that area.

Here are the eight picks the Cardinals hold in this weekend’s draft, which begins Thursday evening.
