The New England Patriots find themselves picking in the enviable 32nd spot of each round. This is of course the position that the reigning Super Bowl champion picks from. The Patriots have nine draft picks in this year’s draft. They have the 32nd pick in the first four rounds in addition to the first compensatory pick of the draft at 97. This compensatory pick is for the departure of CB Aqib Talib after the 2013 season. New Englnd acquired the second pick of the fourth round and TE Tim Wright in their trade with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in exchange for guard Logan Mankins.
The Patriots traded their fifth round selection for Bucs’ linebacker Jonathan Casillas and Tampa Bay’s sixth rounder. New England traded their sixth rounder for Tennessee Titans‘ linebacker Akeem Ayers and the Titans’ seventh rounder. Lastly the Pats traded their seventh rounder for St. Louis Rams receiver Greg Salas and the Pats also received a seventh round compensatory pick. Dealing late round picks and acquiring nearly the same number of late round picks has put the Pats in a position to pick earlier in the later rounds than they would be if they held their original picks.
With these nine selections the Patriots have several key needs to fill, the most glaring of which are at cornerback and guard. The Patriots lost both of their starting cornerbacks, Darrelle Revis, and Brandon Browner, to free agency this offseason. Prior to these departures the Pats had arguably a top five secondary. With these losses that secondary drops to below average. New England will likely draft multiple cornerbacks and it wouldn’t be surprising for them to start at 32.
The Patriots’ second biggest draft need is at guard. With Dan Connolly currently a free agent the Patriots have an open spot to start on their line. The Patriots will likely be targeting a starting guard in the 1-3 rounds and could be eyeing Florida State’s Cameron Erving or Tre Jackson.
Bill Belichick loves to get maximum value for his picks. He may choose to trade back or take the best player available if players at positions of need aren’t readily available where their picking. With the departure of Vince Wilfork there is definitely room on the defensive line and there should be numerous DL available at 32. Florida State’s Mario Edwards or Eddie Goldman could serve as instant impact players on the line available at the end of the first.
