In a draft where some thought an offensive lineman might not be selected in the Top 10 of the 2015 NFL Draft, the Washington Redskins drafted Iowa’s Brandon Scherff. The 6-5 319lb tackle won the Outland Trophy in 2014, the award given to the top interior lineman in college football.
The move was clearly to offer more protection to their quarterback, the injury prone Robert Griffin III. The team doesn’t appear to be interested in moving on from Griffin just yet, picking up his fifth year option.
During the draft process, the Redskins asked Scherff if he’d love to be a member of the Redskins organization and he had a clear answer.
“They just said, ‘I want you to be a Redskin’ and I was like, ‘Absolutely, I love would that,'” Scherff said. “I talked to Coach Callahan, and he said he loves the way I play and they can’t wait to get me out there.”
Like many draft picks, Scherff expressed some relief to have the process come to an end and know where he will be playing in 2015.
“I’m glad it is over, I’m glad we finally found out where it is going to happen and I’m ready to move on,” Scherff said.
“I like to consider myself to be a nasty football player. I want to jump in and earn the respect from all the teammates first and then learn the plays and just go out and improve with all the guys.”
Scherff has big plans with the Redskins, and it starts with being the best player he can be.
“Just be the best player you can be, get a starting job on the line, and obviously everybody wants to win the Super Bowl. So that’s the next thing right there,” Scherff said.
