The Dallas Cowboys were rumored to be taking a running back, but they ended up with a broad jump champion instead.

The Cowboys decided to take Bob Beamon. Wait – no – Byron Jones was the selection. The incredible broad jump helped to vault Byron Jones up draft boards, and the Cowboys decided that Jones’ potential was enough to pull the trigger.

Jones is great at jumping routes and having recovery speed, and his instincts make him a very good player for disrupting the opponents offensive rhythm. The Cowboys absolutely needed someone to help their defense, which is being held together by Rod Marinelli and an Elmer’s glue stick. He is a leader who could help Cowboys fans forget the mess of previous selections at the top of the draft in the secondary, such as Morris Claiborne.

As for the rest of the draft, the pickings in the secondary become much thinner. Landon Collins is the best safety available, and he could still be taken by a needy team in the first round.

But at cornerback, unless Chip Kelly swallows some radium and decides to trade up in the first round to take Ifo Ekpre-Ololmu, it seems less likely that another secondary member will be taken in the first round.
