With the NFL draft less than 10 hours away, the Tennessee Titans demand huge return on #2 pick

There have been trade rumors swirling around the Tennessee Titans and the second overall pick for months now. With consensus opinions holding that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will draft Jameis Winston to be their quarterback of the future with the first overall pick, the Titans have the freedom to deal the #2 pick to any team targeting quarterback Marcus Mariota or any other player not named Jameis Winston. The three teams which have been linked with interest in the #2 pick are the San Diego Chargers, Cleveland Browns, and of course Chip Kelly’s Philadelphia Eagles. There have even been suggestions that the Browns, Eagles, and Titans could work out a three team trade which would send Bradford to Cleveland, Mariota to Philadelphia, and a haul of picks to the Titans.

Whatever the trade ends up being one, if there is one, it will reportedly be very expensive.

All indications point to Zach Mettenberger being the quarterback for the Titans for the forseeable future. They like what they have in him and they aren’t going to jump ship by drafting a quarterback with the #2 pick. This means that unless the Titans are very high on drafting Amari Cooper or Leonard Williams then the best move for them is to trade down and fill as many holes on the team as they can. The RG3 trade in 2012 which was also for the #2 pick may be an indicator for how much a team will have to pay. It also may be leading the Titans to believe they can get that kind of value for the #2 pick. The Washington Redskins traded three first round picks and a second rounder for quarterback Robert Griffin III. Can the Titans get a similar return?

The Cleveland Browns have already reportedly offered both of their first rounders to the Titans in exchange for the number two pick. Whether or not Cleveland intends to use this to draft Mariota themselves or if they intend to deal it to the Eagles in exchange for Bradford and additional picks is uncertain. The only certain thing is that Cleveland would be adding a new quarterback as a result of the trade. The Titans have so far refused this offer, likely they are looking to acquire an additional second rounder in 2015 or a first rounder in 2016.

While the Titans continue to ask more than the Browns appear willing to offer, the countdown to the draft continues to roll down. If a deal isn’t worked out by tonight then expect one team to buckle and give the other what they’re looking for. If the Titans are on the clock with the #2 pick, don’t go far from your TV.
