Bob Myers GM for Golden State Warriors’ receives NBA Executive of the Year Award

Today the NBA announced their winner for the NBA Executive of the Year and the honor went to Bob Myers the GM for the Golden State Warriors. There were a few other names in contention including David Griffin and Mike Budenholzer. In the end it was Bob Myers that received the honor.

The Warriors have seen success this year unlike anything previously with the NBA’s best record of 67-15.

The record is very impressive, but Myers deserve credit for particularly savvy moves in the off-season. In 2014 the warriors had a successful season with a 51-31 record and a second round appearance in the playoffs. After that season though it was Myers that felt like making a risky change by bringing in first year coach Steve Kerr to take the place of Mark Jackson. The change of coaches payed off and the Warriors increased by 16 wins.

Myers also made another difficult decision in the off-season. When Kevin Love was floating in summer in free-agency it was said that the Minnesota Timberwolves wanted Klay Thompson and were willing to trade Love for him. Myers instead trusted in Klay and restrained from the move. This payed off as Klay has improved in every single stat all while playing the least amount of minutes since his rookie year.

Klay Thompson has become an All-Star this year and it now it seems impossible to trade him. He has become such a dynamic player impacting the court in every possible way it is hard to deny he has become a franchise player. Myers had the foresight in this situation to lock down Thompson by signing him to a long term team extension until 2019.

Bob Myers also deserves credit for his draft picks that now have come to bare fruit including DPOY candidate Draymond Green. Harrison Barnes has also seen a spike in play as well as in his efficiency, shooting 40% from three this year, a 6% jump from last year.

David Griffin also received significant consideration for his work with Cavaliers and brining in the best player on the planet to play for your team. Griffin also orchestrated a great set of trades in the mid-season to add depth and sure of weakness within the rest of the Cavaliers roster.

Here are the votes as they stack up for the rest of the league.
