Devin Smith had to sit through the first round of the NFL Draft before getting picked 37 overall by the New York Jets, and it cost him some sleep.

Devin Smith was one of the few draftees in attendance Thursday night that ended up having to wait another day before getting selected. Smith was in great spirits after hearing his name called Friday after being selected 37th overall by the New York Jets, but admitted last night was not easy.

“It was tough at first, but then my family started clowning around, having a good time and it’s was all worth it in the end,” Smith said.

Smith won a national championship his senior year with Ohio State. He said the Buckeyes were out to “prove something” playing Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship then Alabama to earn a shot in the first ever College Football Playoff National Championship.

Smith was a touchdown machine at OSU. He averaged an absurd one touchdown for every four receptions in his four-year career.

Smith also did a lot with the football once he made the catch, averaging 28.2 yards per catch as a senior with 931 yards on 33 receptions, and his 12 receiving touchdowns were tops in the Big Ten. Smith finished his OSU career with 121 catches for 2,503 yards and 30 TDs.

Smith said his favorite football player is Michael Vick and his favorite receiver is Jeremy Maclin. He had no idea the Jets were going to draft him despite speaking with the team at both the Senior Bowl and the combine, but said “it was kind of quiet for those guys” afterwards.
