The NFL Draft is never short on surprises, and the Jacksonville Jaguars shocked everyone by making T.J. Yeldon the third running back taken.

The Jacksonville Jaguars were looking for some help at running back this offseason and they failed to find that help on the open market. Instead, the Jaguars used the NFL Draft to find the help that they needed and they used their second selection of the weekend on a surprise player.

Rather than going with an offensive lineman or another wide receiver, the Jaguars went ahead and drafted a running back — but not the guy we thought would go off the board next.

Ameer Abdullah and Duke Johnson were two names getting a lot of steam late in the weekend, but the Jaguars decided to go with someone else.

Rather than taking one of the consensus top two running backs left in the draft, the Jaguars selected a semi-local kid in Alabama’s T.J. Yeldon. It’s not a bad pick, it’s just not the one we all thought would be called and that’s alright.

Jacksonville got a guy who can be a dynamic third-down back who can develop into a star for the offense. Blake Bortles is the way of the future, and Marquis Lee is a guy the Jaguars want to make into a real receiving threat. Adding Yeldon to the mix means they now have a three-headed offensive weapon and that’s crucial to the development of Bortles as a franchise quarterback.
