The Dallas Cowboys drafted Nebraska pass rusher Randy Gregory in the second round.

Randy Gregory was a potential top-10 pick in the 2015 NFL Draft but he slide to the No. 60 pick after a failed drug test at the NFL Scouting Combine, but the Dallas Cowboys rolled the dice on the pass rusher at the bottom of the second round.

“It’s been a long couple of days but it’s definitely worth it,” Gregory said on TV after he was picked. “I think it’s the best fit for me and I believe the organization believes that also. It was worth the wait and I’m ready to do big things.”

Gregory and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli are big believers in the troubled pass rusher and signed off on the draft pick and nearly took them with their first round pick, but passed in favor of Byron Jones.

Gregory said he made a promise to himself to turn things around and humbled himself and make his family and the Cowboys proud. He will work with Jerry Jones and the Cowboys organization to do big things on and off the field.

Dallas is no stranger to adding pass rushers with off-the-field issues with Charles Haley, Dimitrius Underwood, Alonzo Spellman and Greg Hardy with the former suspended for 10 games after violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy stemming from a domestic assault case in which he was convicted in a court of law but the victim didn’t cooperate with authorities and he reportedly paid her off.

With Hardy out of the mix, the door was opened for Gregory to step in and provide a pass rush off the edge in Marinelli’s defense and if his character concerns that caused him to drop out of the top-10 and to the No. 60 pick can be resolved and he fulfills the promise he made to himself and his family and the Cowboys, this has the potential to be a great pick.

Darren Woodson said it was a great pick as he announced the pick during the NFL Draft and Cowboys fans are certainly hoping he will be able to bring double-digit sacks to Big D, but they have to be concerned his red flags. But then again, maybe they’re not because Gregory is far from the first person the Cowboys have acquired who wasn’t a choir boy.

If he helps the Cowboys win the NFC East and he’s a dominant performer on the edge, they’ll be buying his jersey in droves just as they did for Haley.
