The Tennessee Titans traded down to start the second round and got wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham.

After taking Marcus Mariota in the first round, the Tennessee Titans began the second round of the draft by trading down and acquiring the New York Giants second round pick, fourth round pick and a seventh round pick so they could take Landon Collins.

When the Titans were on the clock at No. 40, the Titans gave Mariota a big target to work with after drafting 6-6, 225-pound wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham.

He did not play last year after transferring to Oklahoma after he began his career at Missouri but he was kicked off the team in the spring before his junior year after a series of off-the-field concerns. He had a suspension and arrest due to marijuana but his biggest transgression was a domestic violence incident where no charges were filed after his victim didn’t cooperate with authorities.

He was the No. 1 overall recruit coming our of Springdale High School where he set the national high school receiving yards record but failed to live up to the hype at Missouri. He had a four-touchdown game against Kentucky and had a dominant performance against Auburn in the SEC Championship Game but did not put up the stats and production you would expect of a player with his size and skill-set.

I like the Titans decision-making process to give Mariota a wide receiver he can grow with but I am concerned that this is the best option for Tennessee to bring into the locker room. The off-the-field concerns are enough for teams to lower him into the third round in the draft but I thought Arizona State wide receiver Jaelen Strong would have been a safer pick considering he doesn’t have any red flags and he was a more productive player and ran a 4.4 40 at the combine.

The Titans gamble may pay off in a big way if Mariota and Green-Beckham develop into the most feared duo in the AFC South in the years to come, but today, it’s a move that carries a lot of risk both on and off the field.
