The Pittsburgh Steelers were ready to take Maxx Williams before the Baltimore Ravens traded up to get him.

The Pittsburgh Steelers already have one tight end on the roster in Heath Miller. The 33-year old veteran has seen his fair share of professional football games, so his future is probably going to see a decrease in production. To replace him, the Steelers were “ready to take” Maxx Williams in the second round of the NFL Draft according to a post-gazzette report.

The NFL is full of surprises. The Pittsburgh Steelers knew that when they risked taking Maxx Williams in the second round. So when the Baltimore Ravens traded up to get the tight end who played his college ball at Minnesota, they couldn’t really be that upset.

Although selecting Maxx Williams would have given the Steelers a pretty viable option at tight end. The 6’4, 250 pound tight end caught 61 passes for Minnesota in just 25 career games, which was seventh all time in the programs history, as well as 13 touchdowns, which is tenth all time in the program.

Instead, the Steelers had to settle for corner Senquez Golson. The Mississippi corner back is a solid pick. Despite being undersized (just 5’9 inches tall), Golson has the speed and intangibles to be a solid NFL defensive back. This does make a whole lot of sense too. After the retirement of future hall of famer, Troy Polamalu, the Steelers are going to do some reloading if they want their defense to have the same impact it has in years past.

Even though the Steelers didn’t get Maxx Williams, it seems they are drafting just fine. Williams was the best tight end in the draft this year. But there is no reason to think they need another tight end just yet. Heath Miller still has some football left in him, so maybe next year they will get another opportunity to draft a tight end.
