Why it’s a bad idea

Putting all your eggs in one basket is not a great idea in a coaching search. There’s no guarantee that Thibodeau is even going to leave Chicago, and Orlando might run out of good options if he doesn’t.

The Magic have things to accomplish this offseason, including addressing Tobias Harris’ upcoming free agency and adding the right pieces to the great young core. The Bulls might be playing for a while, so waiting a few more weeks for Thibodeau could set Orlando back in the offseason.

If Thibodeau stays, the Magic will be way behind in the coaching search and may not find any options they like. Former target Billy Donovan is already off the board. The Denver Nuggets are also searching for a coach right now, and could take Orlando’s backup plan.

It’s understandable that the Magic would want to wait for a coach of Thibodeau’s caliber, but it could easily backfire.
