Jason Garrett: Cowboys support system will help Randy Gregory
Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett believes that the team’s support system will benefit new draft pick Randy Gregory.
How will Randy Gregory fare in the Cowboys system? Just fine, according to head coach Jason Garrett.
Gregory, a defensive lineman out of Nebraska with consensus top 10 talent, fell to 60th overall in the 2015 NFL Draft due to off-the-field issues. Though the nature of those issues are not public, ESPN’s Ed Werder acknowledged that “some people in the league think there are mental health issues” when it comes to Gregory. Obviously, these “mental health issues” that Werder described could be just about anything, and situations like these are all-together complicated, but it seems as though other NFL teams took it into consideration.
Gregory himself has said that he has “some issues I’m taking care of, and those I think are up in the air.”
Though these issues appeared to scare off other teams, the Cowboys took a chance, and landed themselves arguably one of the 10 best players in the draft. Jason Garrett, for one, is not at all concerned about Gregory’s fit within the organization. In fact, he believes that the support systems the Cowboys can offer will only benefit the rookie.
“We believe we have the right kind of environment here with the Cowboys,” Garrett told NFL Network. “We have an excellent coaching staff who believes in coaching the man first, and we also have an excellent support staff who can help out players in every way possible. … Some of the off-the-field concerns that we have with Randy, we feel like we can help address.”

Of course, Garrett is going to put up a positive front and, ultimately, he got a great player at a position of need. “Randy Gregory is a very natural pass rusher,” the coach said. “He seems to have a knack for getting to the quarterback.”
Rhymes aside, Garrett seems excited about his new player, as he should be.
This support system that Garrett references sounds great, but it’s hardly as though the Cowboys have been free of controversy recently. Hopefully the system works better for Gregory than is did in the instances of stupidity from Greg Hardy or the tragedy involving Josh Brent.
As long as Gregory’s “issues” do not become a distraction or manifest themselves in negative ways, the Cowboys will come out of the whole situation with an incredibly talented defensive lineman.
Garrett seems confident – Cowboys fans should too.
