Before the Pirates hand out Clint Hurdle gnomes to their fan, they are taking him all over the city of Pittsburgh to market the giveaway.

Gnomes have become the new bobblehead in sports.

While bobbleheads are still wildly popular, gnomes are starting to make their way throughout all sports as a popular giveaway.

The gnomes tend to feature the most popular bearded players on a team, but they also occasionally are made for players or coaches who can’t grow facial hair.

The latest to get their very own gnome is Pittsburgh Pirates skipper Clint Hurdle. Hurdle has successfully turned the Pirates into a playoff team, much like he did with the Colorado Rockies.

As a result of being a fan favorite, his gnome is being taken all over the city for photo opportunities, before fans can officially get their hands on one.

The purpose of taking Hurdle out and about the town, besides to drum up interest to attend the game, is for fans to have their very own scavenger hunt and guess where the gnome might be located.

The lucky fan that found Hurdle gets the gnome and tickets to the game. Doesn’t sound like a bad idea to waste time on in the middle of the afternoon with nothing to do.

This isn’t the first time a team has held a scavenger hunt for bobbleheads, as the Arizona Diamondbacks once did the same thing a couple years ago for some of theirs.

Giveaways are one of the best things in sports. Taking it to the streets is even better for reaching out to fans.
