Tampa Bay has said that Cobb is going to try to pitch through the injury, but that Tommy John surgery is a viable option. The team said that Cobb experienced a set back in his forearm injury recovery program, which has further delayed his return to the starting rotation.
Manager Kevin Cash said, “He just didn’t feel as good as he was hoping. Any time you’re dealing with a pitcher’s arm, it’s obviously concerning.”
“He just didn’t feel as good as he was hoping. Any time you’re dealing with a pitcher’s arm, it’s obviously concerning.”
Cobb has been sidelined since March 17th with forearm tendinitis, and he is going to be shut down the next few days while doctors examine his arm.
Cobb has been one of Tampa Bay’s best pitchers the past two years. He went 10-9 in 2014 with a 2.87 ERA, and he was a potential CY Young candidate coming into 2015.
Surprisingly, the Rays are ranked 10th in total team ERA in the majors without Cobb. They have been able to hold teams to few runs, giving their offense a chance to score and win games. Only problem is, there offense is ranked 25th and has trouble doing just that, score. However, there have been a few guys that are keeping the Rays afloat.
Chris Archer has been the man thus far in Tampa Bay, and he has been a dominant fantasy option. He has a 1.64 ERA and 42 strikeouts. His fantasy value has absolutely skyrocketed since the beginning of the season. Archer has also been a solid daily fantasy option because of the high volume of strikeouts. If Archer is available on the waiver wire or trade block, go get him. He is worth giving up a couple good players to get.
Jake Odorizzi has been the number two-man for the Rays behind Archer. Odorizzi has a 2.21 ERA and has whiffed 32 batters. Odorizzi has also been a fantasy-wrecking ball because of his high volume of strikeouts. Odorizzi is a solid option to try to pick up off of the waiver wire or trade block because his success is going to continue. He is also a good daily fantasy option because of the long innings he throws, supplementary with the strikeouts.
The only set back for both of these guys, Tampa’s offense cannot produce runs, which hinders the pitchers abilities to get wins. But these guys still need to be on your roster, or radar to acquire, because of their recent success and future potential success.
If Cobb returns in 2015, I wouldn’t jump on him so quick because you don’t know how long he is going to be able to last without having surgery. Let Cobb pitch a game or two, and if he does well, go pick him up. If he fails miserably, you didn’t lose a solid pitcher from your roster.
