One UK fan wanted a body art piece to commemorate the 40-0 season that ended just two wins short.

A self-proclaimed “casual” UK fan decided to commemorate a very memorable season with a tattoo:

As Mrs. Tyler Thompson wrote on KSR, this tattoo shows “true dedication.” It is also an interesting take on John Carlipari’s facial features and skin tone. However, it does give a fairly accurate perspective of how UK fans are reflecting back on the season.

All year long, it seemed almost inevitable that the Wildcats would win the title. As the historic streak continued to grow, it started to seem inevitable that they would run the table, too. That’s why the collective emotion of Wildcat fans after the Final Four loss to Wisconsin was general disbelief. It almost didn’t seem real that the season had ended like it did. But it did.

But as time passed and fans had more time to reflect on the year, the harsh sting of the Wisconsin loss started to fade. Now, most fans, like Cory Eaves, find it hard to dwell on the loss. That’s because, at the end of the day, Coach Cal is still the king at Kentucky. And even though they didn’t win it all this year, the Wildcats have been to four Final Fours in Cal’s five years in Lexington. Plus, they have the 2012 title to show for all the controversy that their one-and-done college players have generated.

And the future still looks bright at UK. The platoon system may have hurt Calipari’s recruiting class for next year, but next year’s incoming class will still be ranked top 3 in the nation. The recruiting class only seems down compared to the previous classes that set ridiculous expectations. But Skal Labissiere (barring any unforeseen eligibility issues) and Isaiah Briscoe are both legitimate elite talents that are guaranteed to impress fans next season. And Charles Matthews and Mychal Mulder will have the luxury of enough roster space to be able to put in quality minutes.

Not only that, but there are several returning players that are in positions to have an impact next year. Alex Poythress seemed poised to have this breakout season this past year before he was sidelined with an ACL tear. If he remains healthy, that breakout season may be coming. Plus, with Tyler Ulis returning to play the point guard position, the offensive potential looks bright. And returning Juniors Marcus Lee, Dominique Hawkins, and Derek Willis all have the experience to come back for great seasons themselves.

In short, the tattoo shows dedication, for sure, but also an unexpectedly perceptive insight into the historic season that never quite was.
