La’el Collins passes polygraph in murder investigation, paternity test negative

La’el Collins’ legal trouble appears to be dissipating a paternity and polygraph test in the case of his slain ex-girlfriend that saw him go undrafted in the 2015 NFL Draft.

La’el Collins was supposed to be preparing to sign his rookie contract this week after the NFL Draft wrapped up last Saturday, but instead the former LSU offensive tackle is embroiled in a legal controversy.

Collins left Chicago, the site of the NFL Draft, last week when his former girlfriend, Brittney Mills, was found murdered in Louisiana. She was pregnant and efforts to save the baby were unsuccessful. Collins flew to Louisiana to meet with investigators who didn’t call him a suspect but he went to clear his name in an effort to enter the NFL without any legal trouble hanging over his head.

Despite not being named a suspect, Collins did not hear his name called during the seven rounds of the draft and is hoping to sign with a team as an undrafted free agent. He has his representatives attempt to have him withdrawn from the draft and enter the supplemental draft but the league declined that request, so he went from a likely top-25 pick to an undrafted player who will play for the league minimum for two years.

You can understand the NFL’s hesitancy to draft a player, especially in the first round, considering former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was just convicted of homicide and the public relations nightmare it would create even if it was a one percent chance he was involved.

The timing is unfortunate for Collins because if this happened two months ago he would have had ample time to clear his name and meet with NFL teams to discuss the case. But he should be closer to being exonerated and closer to an NFL contract after he passed a polygraph test and a paternity test revealed he was not the father of Mills’ child.

According to ESPN’s Josina Anderson, “I’ve been notified by representatives of OT La’el Collins that his paternity test results were negative. Specifically, Collins is not the father of Brittney Mills’ child and Collins passed A polygraph test administered by an independent investigator in connection with Mills’ case.”

Collins met with Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan earlier this week and considering he’s not an ordinary undrafted free agent will have interest from several NFL team who want a first round talent, who by all accounts is only guilty of knowing a person who was murdered, on the cheap.
