New England Patriots quarterback and co-star of Deflategate, Tom Brady has the support of at least one person who isn’t a Patriots fan, and that’s New Jersey governor Chris Christie.

No one really knows how New Jersey governor Chris Christie became a pundit in NFL circles, but apparently he is and he’s here to defend New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady from the wild accusations of lying and cheating that have swirled around him since the Wells Report came out yesterday. Alright, they’re not so wild after all, as there’s plenty of at least circumstantial evidence suggesting that Brady was “generally aware” of Deflategate.

Nevertheless, Chris Christie wants you to know that he thinks everyone is jealous and bitter over Brady’s success and wants to bring him down. No really, that’s what he said. Take a look.

“I think the media and others love for somebody who’s married to a beautiful model, who’s richer than you can imagine and who’s a future Hall-of-Famer, to take a couple shots at him,” Christie said, via Yahoo! Sports.

So all the people “taking shots” at Brady right now are doing so because they’re bitter and jealous, not because they read the Wells Report and came to the conclusion that Brady was at least “generally aware” of the ball deflation going on behind the scenes and further, that he lied about it. Nope, bitter and jealous.

Now, it’s not necessarily a bad thing to defend Brady. The evidence against him isn’t exactly airtight and he still won the Super Bowl after the controversy became general knowledge. If you squint, there’s probably a handful of reasons you could find to legitimately defend him. On the other hand, calling his detractors bitter and jealous probably isn’t going to win you any points.

For example, Brady’s agent came out and called the Wells Report “biased, flawed and disappointing.” David Yee even suggested that the Colts were in on a sting perpetrated by the league. He further added that the league is a client of the law firm of the investigator.

So in other words, the NFL hired the firm to essentially make up a report implicating the Patriots, which obviously would make the report fixed and the NFL, in effect, cheaters. See how he did that? Turned the whole thing around on the league and the Patriots and Brady are unfortunate victims.

Goodell hasn’t responded to that one yet, but more probable than not, he won’t like it.
