Fantasy Baseball Starting Pitchers Breakdown-5/8/15
3 Starting Pitcher Stay-Aways
1. Jered Weaver-Los Angeles Angels: The Angels former ace has had a disastrous start to the season and comes into tonight’s game against the Astros with a 0-4 record and a 6.29 ERA. He has allowed eight home runs in his six starts and at least four earned runs in four of those starts. While he has the potential to turn things back around, don’t go in for name recognition on Weaver for tonight even though he probably will be a cheap option.
2. Cole Hamels-Philadelphia Phillies: Hamels has been erratic this season with three starts allowing one earned run or fewer and three starts allowing four earned runs or more. On Saturday in his last start, he allowed six runs on ten hits in six innings to the Marlins as he fell to 1-3 with a 4.14 ERA. Hamels takes on the Mets and Matt Harvey tonight, so I’d look elsewhere in daily leagues and even consider benching Hamels in season-long leagues depending on your situation.
3. Jason Hammel-Chicago Cubs: The Cubs got an exceptional start from Hammel a week ago Monday when he held the Pirates scoreless for eight innings to pick up his second win of the season. However, I’d stay away from Hammel for now since he has allowed a home run and at least three runs in each of his other five starts this year. He takes on the Brewers in Milwaukee tonight and is also dealing with an issue with a cracked nail on his throwing hand making him too much of a risk for me tonight.
