MLB issues a one-game suspension to Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto for making contact with an umpire.

If you touch an umpire, MLB will get you. Joey Votto is the most recent player to learn that lesson.

Votto, the Cincinnati Reds first baseman has been issued a one-game suspension by Major League Baseball for making contact with an umpire, bumping him in the chest. Votto will serve the suspension during Friday night’s game against the Chicago White Sox. Votto also received a fine for an undisclosed amount.

During Wednesday night’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, Votto was called out on three straight strikes from pitcher Gerrit Cole. Votto became so angry that, during the protest of the call, he spiked his helmet on the ground and flipped his bat out of anger. During the commotion, Votto made contact with home plate umpire Chris Conroy and was subsequently ejected from the game.

Upon seeing the altercation, Reds manager Bryan Price left the dugout to calm Votto down. Unfortunately he got there a little too late.

Major League Baseball confirmed the announcement on Friday afternoon.

Just two weeks ago, David Ortiz, the Boston Red Sox slugger, also received a one-game suspension after bumping into an umpire. It was announced on Friday that Ortiz lost his appeal of the suspension.

After playing just 62 games last year due to injury, Votto is excelling thus far in the 2015 season. The first baseman is hitting .311 with seven home runs and a .986 OPS.

Luckily for the Reds, it’s just one game. The team should be able make it through and come out with a win.
